This minisymposium focuses on all aspects of optimization strategies for large scale systems and the design of novel materials. We are particularly interested in optimization problems with high-dimensional parameter spaces that lend themselves to gradient-based optimization. Contributions from inverse optimization, control problems, and/or design optimization are sought, in particular cross-cutting talks that discuss methods that are applicable across a range of optimization problems are welcome. Thus we aim to bring together researchers working on state-of-the-art optimization problems, including topology and shape optimization techniques with direct application in materials design to exchange ideas, present novel developments, and discuss recent advances. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
